Types of Hearing Tests

Diagnostic Comprehensive Audiological Evaluation for infants, children and adults

This evaluation determines type and severity of any hearing loss, and whether medical intervention is advisable, and whether hearing aid use is indicated.

Auditory Processing Evaluation

After the completion of the hearing testing, an Auditory Processing Evaluation can determines if the issue is the abnormal interaction of hearing, neural transmission and the brain’s ability to make sense of sound, or in other words what the brain does with what one hears.

Immittance measurements including tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing

These tests are used to determine if there is a middle ear involvement in the hearing loss. This can result if there is a ear infection or other blockage that is responsible for the difficulty.

Otoacoustic Emission testing

This testing is passive, results are available without patient input. Can be used to screen newborn infants and determine if there is damage to the cochlea of the inner ear. Non-invasive objective test which measures hair cell function of the inner ear.
